Such places were considered the exclusive domain of wealthy Lords, businessmen, and politicians, and used for polite discourse, drinking, and smoking cigars. To become a member of members of the Gentleman’s Clubs, these men were judged on their eligibility by class and gender.

Since the early 20th century, with new social, economic, and political developments, the concept of private members' clubs evolved and redefined what it means to be a part of the new exclusive network.
